Pattern Question

Juliane

Question

Working on Big Chill Cardigan by Simone Francis.
I don't understand "ss, ch1"

It reads -
Row 1 (RS) (Ss, ch1) into first st (counts as a st throughout), htr into each st to end, turn.

The foundation row was Htr. How do I turn my work around and do a slip stitch, chain one, and continue with Htr. It looks wierd. It's awkward to turn work and go straight to the slip stitch without a turning chain. I don't understand.

The pattern is in UK terms in case you are in the US, so htr is hdc.

Turning and slip stitching into the first stitch is a common instruction, it shows up in patterns all the time when you are making something flat and shaped, example shaping a neckline or armhole opening.

In this case the chain 1 appears to be the turning chain that takes the place of the first hdc/htr in the row.  I'm guessing the designer may have done it this way to reduce the much greater bulk of chain 1, hdc in the first stitch.
