Joining yarn together

Bummer!

3 methods I use, in order of my personal preference.

1) if it is wool, the 'spit splice'.  Splay out the plies of the 2 ends maybe 2 inches, overlap them, get them wet, and rub them together like when you were a kid playing with clay, making a snake, to felt them together--only takes a few seconds.  You don't even need to wait for it to dry.

2) if not wool, the braided join.  Divide the plies of both ends into 2 by several inches, overlap them with the yarn and braid them together.  This takes a little while, but it seems very sturdy.  video

3) if it's not wool, the Russian join. This is a little harder to describe, but fold 1 end over the other, thread 1 end into a needle and sew the end back on itself, toward the skein end.  Do the same with the other end.  This is a lot faster than the braided join, and I may be totally off base but it seems a tiny bit less sturdy.  video

All of these seem like they'd really be obvious in the fabric, but they are surprisingly hard to spot even when you know 'about' where the join was.
