Hi and welcome to the 'ville!  

Do the ears start at the top or bottom?  It's OK if you type in a couple of rows of a pattern here that are giving you trouble, or if it's a free pattern on the net, give us a link so we can see for ourselves.  Meanwhile, making guesses...

...If the ears start at the top (which seems less likely, but would be more fiddly and possibly confusing/disorienting), I imagine you would start with (maybe) 2 chains and make 1 or 2 stitches in the second chain from the hook, then turn, ch1  and make increases (2 or more stitches into 1) into the first rows' stitches, ch1, turn, and increase at the sides of each row to make it wider.  This can be a little fiddly at the beginning, but will get easier after your get more stitches and rows going.

If the ears start at the bottom, this would be less fiddly as you have more fabric to hang onto and orient you, and you'd be decreasing stitches at the side until you get to a point.
