Hi Marylou, welcome to the 'ville!

I suggest following what it says, word for word.  If you dc2tog, it's over 2 stitches, and turns 2 stitches into 1.  It IS possible to DC4tog, but then it would have said so, but you would end up with 1 stitch after doing so.  I interpret it to mean dc2tog, then dc2tog again, so decreasing 4 stitches into 2.
