Crochet question

I am working on a cat Afghan and there is a graph to use in order to get the right  pattern, it is made of squares that are sewn together,there are different color cats on the squares they have borders that go around the whole square using the colors of the cats, the background is cream, the border is approx three stitches in the work, is there anyway to change colors without having so many tails, some stitches are only 2 in each row on opposite sides of square to make border,running horizontally
