The problem isn't you, or your age, or your iPad ( I am on an iPad mini right now, I love my iPad!)

The problem is pinterest.  There are all kinds of things on there, from one of a kind things people have made so there is no pattern, to scans of book pages which are violating the copyright of the book, to images stolen from some other source paired with scans of patterns that are similar to but not the same as what is pictured.  If you have a crochet magazine you like, their pinterest page should be a reliable one to follow, or a designer you like may link their patterns on their pinterest page.  Beyond that, I find pinterest to be more of a time suck than a reliable source of patterns.

The most reliable online source of patterns is Ravelry.com.  They have a database of patterns for crochet and knitting.  You can't access all the listed patterns from there, but you'll find info as to where to look for the pattern.  And many patterns are directly available on Ravelry.
