Edward's Menagerie yarn size options

I’m a little confused on the yarn to use for Edwards menagerie animals. The chart states for standard size is (US) light worsted/8 ply.  The yarns have a number, 4,6,8,etc. the #4 says medium. Is this the correct size for standard size animals???  Are all yarns marked with #4 the same size??

Hi, and welcome to the 'ville.

The US yarn weight system is different from the UK system.  UK uses the word 'ply', which has nothing to do with actual spun and twisted together plies that make up the yarn - example, Bulky yarn can be just 1 actual spun ply, but is rated over 10 'plies' as a yarn weight class in the UK system, where the US system gives bulky yarn a 'weight' designation of 5 an up - it's just a number, the system could just as well be A, B, C rather than numeric.

Yarn weight has to do with wraps per inch, this is how yarn weights are defined in the US

Also on the same page as the above link, look at the menu on the right side under 'standard yarn weight system' which tells you a typical range of stitch gauge, and suggested hooks/needles to use by yarn weight (varies by everyone's individual stitch tension of course).

So long answer to say that 99% of patterns for toys (that I have seen) call for US#4 weight yarn, which you will see falls into a defined range of 'wraps per inch'.  So everything marked US #4 weight is very close to the same size, but not absolutely the same.
