If you look closely at it, blow it up if you can - it's just solid granny squares (that have gaps only in the corners, straight DC between) either all 1 color or half 1 color & half another.  Wouldn't be hard to sketch it out on graph paper from the photo.  

The body is probably a strip of sc (can't quite tell, might be a taller stitch), and if I were reverse-engineering this I'd used surface slip stitch for the antennae. 

Edit, forgot the spots - look like those squares are first rounds in black, then change color to 'wing color' in last round.

What I'd do is turn the granny every round; makes it reversible, also should leave the second color waiting for you in the right spot so you don't have to carry it.

I think I'd not continuously join because of the colors, but rather do sewn mattress stitch so it's invisible.  Do all the seams in 1 direction, then all the seams in the other for the fewest ends.
