Hello & welcome. A quality size 10 cotton thread is your best choice for the bedspread. If you're in the states, I think the most economical yet well made would be Aunt Lydia's. It comes in a multitude of colors as well. Check Raverly for patterns. Many times, the people that have previously made the pattern will leave notes & suggestions that are very helpful. The pattern will suggest the proper amount of thread for the project.

Grab your yarn and hooks, put your feet up and sit a spell.

I agree a nice size 10 is good.  Aunt Lydia is a good choice and I would get the large ball of thread. 

Now best to look for patterns is  to just google what you are looking for.  Sometimes you can find a nice vintage one.
