Pattern Help

Hello!  I am in some need of assistance!  I am trying to make this marled crochet basket (link MARLED CROCHET BASKET), and I am having some difficulty on the beg side.  It states that the "Ch  3 at beg of following rnds does not count as dc", however when I get to the 3rd round I am confused on where I should put my slip stitch.  I had first tried skipping the chain and putting it in the first stitch after that, but the result looked nothing like the picture?  Am I reading the pattern correctly and that it will eventually look better or am I doing something wrong?

First, do you have 100 Stitches around? Doublecheck your stitch count. Next the pattern says:
3rd rnd: Ch 3. *1 dcfp around each of next 3 sc. 1 dcbp around each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first dcfp.

So be sure you’re joining to the first dcfp stitch. Basically ignore the ch3 that you did at the beginning of the row.
