The stitch pattern once established is a multiple of 4 +1, the 1 is probably the first stitch to 'bookend' the last stitch of the row, or the other way around.

The plus 2 is the turning chain 'allowance' for just the foundation row.  

The nice thing about crochet, in general...when in doubt, make a few extra chains than you think you need, turn, work back.  You can pick out the extra chains later and weave in the end.   I  do this even when a pattern gives a specific (large) number, just in case I get distracted and lose count--nothing worse than working back over a couple hundred chains and finding you're 1 short at the end...
