Wavy Ripple vs. sharp chevron

Question

How do you crochet sharp chevrons and not wavy ripples when you crochet a blanket? (Chevron in the first pics, ripple in the last one)

Is it how many stitches you add between increases and decreases, the increases or decreases themselves, or what? I like the sharp chevrons, not so much the ripples, because the chevrons seem more modern, while the ripples are more retro. Maybe it’s just me  I'm new to ripple/chevron crocheting and wanted to crochet a blanket, but also make sure I do it right lol. So I wanted to make sure I get chevrons and not ripples.
