Wavy Ripple vs. sharp chevron

How do you crochet sharp chevrons and not wavy ripples when you crochet a blanket? (Chevron in the last pics, ripple in the first one)

Is it how many stitches you add between increases and decreases, the increases or decreases themselves, or what? I like the sharp chevrons, not so much the ripples, because the chevrons seem more modern, while the ripples are more retro. Maybe it’s just me  I'm new to ripple/chevron crocheting and wanted to crochet a blanket, but also make sure I do it right lol. So I wanted to make sure I get chevrons and not ripples.

Differences between the styles has to do with spacing in the increases and decreases. This link to Red Heart Yarns has some great explanations about these stitches.

Funny, I think of it the other way around- not the construction explanation, but the sharp chevrons in SC can be seen in patterns from the 1800s, but the soft gradual waves and taller stitches seem to be more popular lately.  Who knows, they're both pretty

Maybe I think it’s modern ‘cuz chevrons are coming back lately lol while ripples/waves just remind me of the 70s and all those afghans made in the ugly colors of the decade.
