Welcome to Crochetville! 

What are you making? Please provide a link to where you got the pattern. We can answer more accurately when we can see it. Also, you can type the row where you're confused. It's easier if we know the entire row. 

My guess is that it means 2dc in each of the next 5 stitches.

Agree with Redrosesdz.  2DC in the same stitch 5 times is the same as putting 10 stitches into 1, which is not impossible, and the instructions would have said it that way, once, and wouldn't have needed the parentheses.  When you see (do something), it means to do everything inside the parentheses, into 1 stitch.
