Welcome to Crochetville!

You can take most afghan patterns and make it twin size. Here's how...

Find a pattern and yarn that you like. Make a swatch of the pattern that is ~5x5". Measure the middle 4" across to get the number of stitches and pattern repeats. Measure the middle 4" vertically to get the number of rows and row repeats. Multiply each to figure out how many you need for the width & length. (Remember that you can add a border, if it's too small.)

Here are typical sizes...

I'm working on a pattern that is already good for twin size...

It's very girly, so for my grandsons I replaced the hearts with stars.

That's a pretty pattern Redrosesdz.  Red Heart has a lot of pretty 'aran style' blankets that I've always admired, but I don't have much need for making blankets.

Welcome to the 'ville, CarolinaHooker!  I'm not sure if you've tried it, but joining squares 'as you go' is the bees knees as far as I'm concerned (I'm fussy about how things look, but I'm also a little lazy).  There are several ways to do this, but in general you make the first square, then on the last round of the second you 'reach over' to the first square and make a stitch, then come back to the second square and resume until you get to the next 'reach over' spot.

Corner to corner projects are really 'in' now.  Here's one (I really like the look of the long gradual color changes on this one, or you could make stripes in school colors etc. as well).  You can adjust this to any size, this one is 45" x 55".  You start by increasing on each side (so you're making a triangle), until you get 1 side the short measurement you want, then stop increasing on that side but keep increasing on the other until you get the other measurement you want, then decrease on both sides till you run out of stitches.  If you read through the pattern, this will make more sense.
