Grandma Jeans Christmas Stockings

Don3ll

Question

Can anyone help me figure out a pattern for this simple crochet stocking? These are a trademark holiday staple my grandma used to make. I would guess the pattern is at least 30-50 years old?

I am new to the craft and didn't get to learn the whole process before she passed away last year...

any help would be deeply appreciated!

How nice of you to carry on her tradition!

I'll try to find a pattern, but I think it's pretty easy to 'wing' it.  And since you have a physical stocking to examine more closely, you could probably count the stitches to reverse engineer it more exactly than my attempt.

It looks like it's made in 2 pieces and sc'd or slip stitched together at the edges.

I'd start at the bottom.  Chain a length about 3 chains wider than you want, turn.  Work in DC in rows, increasing in the last stitch at the toe edge only for (it looks like) the first 4(5?) rows.  To increase, just put 2 stitches into 1 at that edge. Then, reverse the process and decrease (DC2together) at the to edge for 4(5?) rows.  Note - double check my row counting by looking at the original.

If you wanted the toe to stick out more, you could DC3together and then mirror the decreases.

The casing for the ''bootlace' looks like it's DC, chain 1, skip 1, repeat OR DC, chain 2, skip 2 repeat.

The row following would be DC in each DC, and DC around each chain.

After that, straight DC to the cuff.  Before ending off, make a chain for the hanger and secure it.  Now that I look at it, the very last row might be SC?

Lace is just a chain I believe, or possibly a chain with slip stitches back across.

Here are a few that are similarly constructed, no 'bootlace' but that part is easy.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gingerbread-stockings   this is DC

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/christmas-stockings-to-knit-and-crochet-santa-claus-stocking   this is SC; if you used this, you'd probably want the eyelet row for the lacing to be in DC to give the lace more room

Oops, hit post button too soon.  A couple more:

More pronounced toe, you  could adjust that by making the starting chain shorter and eliminating or shortening the instep http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/christmas-stocking-10

Thank you! She taught the SC stitch for this stocking but I was thinking it really looked more DC too!

I know for sure it's made with two pieces.. putting then together will be the interesting part.

I have tried counting chains but my eye my is still developing for that haha . I really appreciate all your input and will keep you all postsed as I attempt to recreate this family tradition :)

thanks again!

Just a little note about the first one listed here.  I'm thinking it might be the British version, because it uses "treble crochets" instead of double crochets.   ????  Easy enough to change to American!

Oh, good catch!  She also says '8 ply yarn' which is another sure sign it's UK terms.  I was eyeballing the photos to find structurally similar ones to the OP's and didn't look at the actual patterns. She also links to conversion tables, which is helpful :hook
