Solomon's Knot AKA Lover's Knot - Need Tips, Please!

redrosesdz

Question

HI Everyone!

I just started my first project using the Solomon's Knot (Lover's Knot).  I've got the stitch down, but I'm having problems keeping them even.  The pattern calls for the first loop to be 3/4".  Other than using a ruler on every stitch, is there an easier way?

I don't blame you! Hairpin lace is a lot easier to keep even, because the long strands are the width of the loom. I really enjoyed it.

Solomon's knot is driving me crazy. The stitch itself is easy enough. But, keeping them all the same is hard. I saw one tip to use your thumb. Apparently I have a huge thumb, because the loops were too long.

I'm eyeballing it after measuring the first several. It's okay, but I can see where the ones I made longer stick out. The ones I made short are pulling on the fabric. Argh!

It is challenging to me also, and not one I seek out to do . But it sure is pretty! you might look at Vashti Braha's blog. I think she has some posts about them, she uses term Lover's Knot as well.

There is a hint, I think it is in the first Harmony Guide, about holding the loop to keep it in place while working it.

Sorry I don't have too much time right now, or I would post link.

I guess Vashti also uses the term Love Knot. Here's a couple posts http://crochetpatterncompanion.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-to-crochet-love-knot-part-1-of-3.htm

If I think of anything else I've seen online I'll post.

As far as regulating size of the loops, could you use a strip of cardboard? I've done that for drop stitch patterns.

Or maybe just embrace the variations....I say that even though it's very hard for me to do :blush

I like the idea of cardboard. Thanks for the links, too. I'll take a look at my next crochet break.

Unfortunately having different sizes didn't work. The project starts with 10 rounds. At the end of the 10th it should be flat and a certain size. Mine curled and was 3" too small. So I ripped it out. Since I need bigger loops, I'm trying the thumb method of measuring. If it doesn't work, I'll rip it again. **sigh**

I'm about to start round 9/10 using my thumb as the measuring tool.  So far it isn't curling and it looks like it's on track to be the right size.  Yippee!

This is my first Lover's Knot project.  I probably wouldn't have done one, but I fell in love with the vest in Annie's Attic  "Crochet With Love Knots" by Jenny King.  It's not on Ravelry.  If you click on the link and scroll to the bottom there are multiple pictures of patterns in the book.  The one I'm doing is the last picture in both rows.
