Doily rug

I want to make a large doily rug.  I can't decide what yarn to use.  Cotton would be sturdy and weighty on the floor and would look great.  But I am worried that it would be really heavy and difficult to wash and dry.  Acrylic would be softer and easier to wash, but it would be more slippery.  If it's a doily, I can't really put a rug gripper under it.  What experience do you  all have with this?

Performix is a fabric gripping spray. I found it while looking at "rug grip" on Amazon. It got good reviews and should work well for either fiber.

I think cotton being heavy-ish would be an asset for keeping a rug in place on your floor better (along with the grippy stuff).  Acrylic pills much worse than cotton, and cotton would wear better...back in the day 'rug yarn' was cotton or cotton blend.
