Northern lights

Tinezz

Question

Hi All,

I'm a bridesmaid for my friends wedding and they are getting married in Iceland.

I wanted to make her a special afghan to thank her for asking me to be part of her and her husbands to be special day.

I know she is planning a trip to the blue lagoon for the wedding guests and we are going in February so the Northern lights will be in full swing.

I am relatively new to crochet and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I can do a northern lights/blue lagoon blanket. What stitch would work best to reflect the idea as a whole. I can work with blanket in full or working on granny squares so any ideas, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Crochetville!

This isn't what you asked for, but I'm partial to wedding ring afghans/quilts as wedding gifts.  There's one on ravelry done with a white a background with the rings in a variety of blue shades.  The blues remind me of a blue lagoon.

Here's one called "northern lights" ...

A ripple-type pattern popped into my head too, when you mentioned Northern Lights. Either stripes, or maybe a variegated blue, green, purple.  I just looked at redheart.com, there is a Super Saver colorway called 'Icelandic' (but reminds me more of a glacier than the northern lights).  They also have 'lagoon', but it looks sort of tropical.  'Wildflower' might be a possibility...

Unfortunately that Herrschner's pattern link is broken, try this one (it's in a book to purchase)

The Herrschner's photo reminded me of a blanket I made a couple of years ago, a crochet version of the knit 'feather and fan' ripple - it's an easy repeat, just pay attention to the stitch counts (as for all ripples).  It was this pattern:

At one time I thought I would make this afghan in colors I had seen of a photo of the Northern Lights, but, as of yet, have not made it. The colors were very striking in shades of purples, blues, greens and dark pinks.

My first thought is also a ripple, or something with a wavy pattern like Reni linked to .

Magic Flow is a rectangular stole, would not be difficult to expand it to a blanket http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/magic-flow-stole
