I have a grandson due at the end of this month.  I spent hours searching for a hat, sweater, booties pattern.  I didn't care if it was free or not.  What I wanted was something more than just sc, hdc, dc for the whole thing, but not frilly.  I found a few, but they weren't newborn size.  Finally I found a pattern good for either gender...

For a boy, I changed the tie on the sweater to 3 buttons.  I also added the same border that I used for his blanket to tie the set together.  For a girl, I added a simple shell for the final edge and a flower applique to the hat.  Here are my results...

This pattern is easy to follow.  If you decide to keep looking, good luck and please share the link you find!  :)

Sorry for my ignorance--but what is a BICO?  I'm sure I'll be :blush  when I learn what it is!

Actually , this is my go to for boy or girl! I can probably do this one in my sleep, but you can jazz it up with buttons, trims... appliques...I did one in brown and put a turquoise hedgehog button on it and then a turquoise hedgehog applique.. It was the cutest thing!!

Hi Michelle-

The Hexagon Sweater is at the top of my list for sweaters for baby boys. So many things can be done to change the look on it and it works up quickly and easily. Hexagon pic and link. The Solid Granny Square pattern is what I used for the center of the baby blanket (with my own border) that's with this sweater.

Thanx so much for the links!!!  The sweaters are gorgeous!

I made a coming home from the hospital set for my new Granddaughter and a friend fell in LOVE with it.  I love making stuff for people that really 'get it'.

I ended up going with this one http://www.justcrochet.com/textured-coat-usa.html for this sweater but now I have a couple more to try.
