hook size

I have some old bone (or plastic) hooks that have lost their size information.  How can I size them?

I have a metal ruler, that has holes in it to measure size of knitting needles and crochet hooks.  You can get them at Michael's and Joann's.

Thanks, I'll look into it.  I used a drill bit gauge to size some knitting needles.  That may work for hooks, too.

Be sure to measure where the tapered throat meets the straight shank http://www.craftyminx.com/2011/10/crochet-school-lesson-2.html

 

You can also lay the hook on a ruler to see approx how wide it is.

That is good!  I used a drill bit gauge to size some knitting needles.  I put in sizes I knew and went from there on the ones I didn't know.  I can do the same with the hooks since I know the part to measure.  Thanks for the info.

If you are trying to measure "Boye" style hooks, you'll find you can't get the hook head through the holes in your gauge to get the proper hook size (which is properly measured on the shank toward the finger grip from the start of the taper for the throat.  In-line hooks are fine with the hole type gauges but if you'd like a more universal measuring tool, I suggest a slotted tool like the one sold by Lacis, or the open slotted one sold by Gourmet Crochet.

If you have a Harbor Freight Hardware store near you, they have a cheapie plastic caliper for $2.99 that should be be accurate enough for hooks (to the nearest mm).

Granny Square, thank you for posting this. For a while i've wanted to get an inexpensive caliper, but didn't want to pay $9postage for a $3 tool ;-D

Glad to help!  Yeah, that wouldn't be quite accurate enough for NASA engineers, but good enough for 'aluminum'/yarn hooks (not so much for steel/thread hooks).
