What stitch is this

I have inherited a rug crocheted by my grandmother in the 40/50/60s/70s using all the left over wool from jumpers and socks. As she had left over wool she would add to it. I am trying to do the same but I have always been more of a knitter than a crocheter. Can you tell me what the stitch is here. Is it a double crochet? Or is in fact it some sort of knitting (do not look at the red wool as that was just there to stop it running) Can anyone help?

I think some is double crochet and some is half double, but the stitches are worked between stitches rather than into the top of stitches.
