herringbone half double crochet ????

i'm having huge problems with this pattern

my favorite sweater clutch

 

mine looks NOTHING like this

 

i'm doing the stitch wrong some how. i'm not getting the "ridge" look

for the body of the purse (not the color)

 

suggestions?

i thought so.... i don't usually have trouble with pattern/stitch directions.....

Are you reading the directions EXACTLY????

That tends to be where I go wrong with things (though I haven't tried this pattern yet so can't comment on the stitch).
