Need a warm climate comfort pattern

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I figured here was as good as anywhere else! 

 

My cousin's husband passed away last week. She's long distance and several times removed (my dad's cousin's daughter) so I just found out. I'd like to send her something, but she lives in Austin TX and I think that maybe an afghan or anything like that might be inappropriate for the weather there... 

 

Does anyone have any ideas of something nice to make and send? Just to let her know I've been thinking of her?

That's very thoughtful of you to make something for your cousin. How about a very lightweight shawl? Living in hot areas still require a bit of shoulder and arm cover in air conditioned rooms. For someone else, I made this Elise Shawl with a size 5 crochet thread and it turned out lovely.

I'm sorry about your cousin's loss.

 

You could make a lap throw or something like that. 

As mentioned, hot places have air conditioning in summer and most places get fairly cool in winter, so throws are still needed.

I have a friend that lives there and it actually does get cool in the evenings.  She has several afghans on her sofa that she curls up with in the evening.

I just looked at average temps, lows 40s and highs 60s in the winter.  Maybe find a lacy or open pattern if you want to make a blanket, or choose a pattern that uses a lighter weight yarn than worsted.

I started a sort of open shawl that I'm hoping will work... I'm afraid it's working out to be a little more long and narrow than it should be... If all else fails, a lapghan will just have to suffice!
