hey lauren, i think,if i remember correctly, sandra was advising to use an I hook, three rounds of the chosen color, , with only 2 sc bwtn the corner groups, and the last round in black, for a total of four rounds. Least that is how Im making mine. hope that is correct info to pass on, sandra, can you verify again please, thanks.

Correct. 3 rounds equal 4 inches. MAybe try crocheting a little looser. even with all the one sI collecting last time some were off. But when I connected them you couldnt tell one bit. So just make them. We all crochet different. katy's orange ones sent are a tad bigger then my green ones. But once all connected you will never know. :)

I have found that if they are off a bit, not a bunch, it makes no diff at all either, so sandra is right about that. I think I must crochet looser than some, but doesn't really matter too much if it's only a smidge off, and too, squares can either shrink, or grow, when stacked in a puffy, lol they have a mind of their own!!

I had to go up to a J hook and concentrate on crocheting loose to get 3 rounds to equal 4 inches.  Just an interesting observation the brand and age of the hook you use also affects your guage.  I tend to use my old Boye hooks the most-----many of those would be at least 40 years old.
