Need help with stars for an American flag blanket

Jaclyn Best

Question

Hello, I'm new here! Let me just start off by saying that I know very little about crocheting. I can only do a basic stitch that one usually learns when they are first learning to crochet.

Anyway, I had bought a gorgeous American flag afghan on Ebay. I'm planning to add gold fringe to 3 sides of it, like an embellished flag would look (fringe is very easy--I know how to do that!), but I'm afraid that the stars on it aren't the greatest. They are white x's that I believe have just been tied on with separate yarn (I can most likely just cut them off). I've posted the auction below so that you can hopefully see what I'm talking about. I want to make some kind of crochet stars, but I have NO clue how to do it. I was thinking to crochet a line, shape it into a star (like how you would draw a five-pointed star) and tie it down in a few places. I would do the same for both sides.

I'm not sure if this would work in the long run, but I was also hoping to get suggestions to make better stars. I appreciate any feedback! :)

Welcome to the ville :hook

It sounds liek maybe you know how to do single crochet?  You will probably need to learn a few more things in order to make stars.

There are quite a few free patterns for 5 pointed stars, you can find by googling "crochet pattern five pointed star".

This is one of the simplest http://summerfete.blogspot.com/2011/12/itty-bitty-crochet-star-tutorial.html  (UK treble is US double and UK double is US single, and there is a clear stitch diagram using the universal symbols http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/chart_crochet.html )   You could make that pattern just about any size you want by using smaller or larger yarn and hook.

I actually think the cross stitched X's are fine and are done that way because they are the easiest.

Craft stores sell felt stars that you can whipstitch on....if you can't find a good crochet pattern for stars. To size stars properly to your afghan and have them look good may be difficult with yarn, and you may have to crochet the stars in thread to attach onto the afghan.

Here's a free patternfor the whole flag blanket, the stars should be in proportion to the flag size you have.

The patterns on this site are free but you do have to register - they are patterns from Annie's Attic & related publications.

I plan on doing an afghan like that.  Not sure if the ebay one is the same but the one I like is a leisure arts pattern and I like the way the hexagons are with the stars in the middle so it's crocheted as one hexagon and you start with the white then add the blue then join them I think, don't have my pattern in front of me.  You can see a close up of a finish on this blog.  You can buy that booklet as a download from leisure arts or you can just get the flag pattern as a download from them and I think it's also in another of their bigger booklets.  Mary
