How Do I Modify The Length of An Afghan?

Poochie

Question

Hi,

I'm going to start a ripple afghan - Vintage Lace (Leisure Arts 5950).

The finished afghan is only 48 1/2" wide with a starting chain of 185 sc.

I'd like this afghan to be much wider...say 60", but I don't know how to calculate how any sc's I need to make it that length.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Many thanks!

Stephanie

you can estimate the number of chains to add.  if it starts out as 48" and you want 60", you are adding 12" which is 1/4 of 48.  so divide 185 by 4 and add that many chains.  Also go ahead and add even more, say 10% more just as a cushion.  Then go ahead and do your first row of the pattern until it is as wide as you want it.  ignore any unused chains, you can unpick them later and trim the yarn end and weave it in.

this will work if the ripple pattern starts in the first row.  if the first row is all sc or something, and the ripple doesnt start until later row, then you will have to figure the pattern multiple and add to your beginning chain a number of stitches corresponding to the multiple.  here is a blog post about multiples http://offthehookcrochetdesign.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/how-to-find-and-use-pattern-multiples/
