Xmas themed square

Its not great but this is my first attempt at surface crochet. Atleast you can see that it says "God Jul" (Merry Christmas in Swedish). It is a 6x6inch crocheted square for the Global Square Exchange.

I LOVE it!  My Mother was born in Sweden and I would love, love, love to try to make something like this as a tribute and rememberance of her!  Is there a pattern anywhere?

Sadly I just made it up as I went along.

Using DK weight and a 4mm hook, just crochet a plan sc 6x6" square Chained 27 if I remember correctly, sc 26 down the chain. Once worked up a square, went around the square in sc (3sc in each corner) then changed colour to red and went around it again. The holly is from Attic24 blog http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/holly-leaves.html using DK yarn and 3.5mm hook. Then just did the surface crochet, learnt it from http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-surface-crochet-or-surface-slip-stitch/.

Haha my Swedish MIL has just asked me to make her a couple as well to use as Xmas decorations. So it looks like I will be getting more practice with the surface crochet then
