Christmas Tree

I am looking for a pattern for a Christmas tree.  I want one that is around 2 ft. tall or more. I would like one that is free standing.  Styrofoam cones are expensive!  or it could be used on another

type of base.

Here is the Ravelry search for Christmas trees.  There are other things such as tree skirts mixed in so you have to look through it. Some require cones, some are stuffed.  I haven't had a chance to look but there might be some free standing patterns.

Have you tried Dollar Tree for cones?  They have them sometimes.

Does anyone remember the Christmas tree pattern that went around a 2 liter soda bottle?  You could then put mini lights in the tree and run them thru the bottle.  I made one years and years ago and gave it away.  Can't find my pattern anywhere but I'm sure I got it from here.

How about a tomato cage?  Isn't that about 2 ft. tall?  Then start at the top with a small tree pattern (just to get the feel for what you're doing) that is worked in the back loop with increases until it's as tall as the cage., leaving the front loop free to go back around and around in a simple scallop that will give you the branches.  If the scallops are wide (because it's a tall tree), you might just do the scallops in every other row.  I can see this in my mind, but it's hard to put into words!

 

I would probably also wrap the cage in paper or thing fabric, to keep the yarn from snagging on the wire.
