Yardage Counters - How Much Do I have left?

From time to time there are discussions about how to know how much yarn you have left

The use of line counters in conjunction with measuring yardage is not always as good as we might hope. In order to show examples (photos) of some of the reasonably available devices, first thoughts went into a blog entry yesterday.

I recently wanted to use up my leftover yarn.  I was making footie slippers, for charity.   I have a small scale that measures ounces and grams.  I weighed the ball,  started on one slipper and  weighed it along as I crocheted. I also weighed the slipper.  When I got to half or almost half,  I knew how much I had left for the other slipper.   It worked out very good for me although not so much for knitting.  And some of the patterns tell how much weight is needed for it.  After finishing the pair, I wrote a note as to how much yarn that pair took.  It was helpful for the other weighed yarn balls.
