Vote for 1 of the 10 Pattern Semfinalists for the CAL Shawl Challenge

NOTE: Please vote on the poll by midnight central time on Friday, May 3. The winning pattern will be whichever one has the most votes at the close of the poll. If two or more patterns share the same number of highest votes, I'll break the tie.

Thanks for submitting such wonderful patterns for us to consider! I really wanted to narrow it down to 5 or 6, but I just couldn't eliminate some of these. So there are 10 free shawl patterns for your consideration.

Everyone who participates will make the same pattern, but you're encouraged to experiment with different colors, different yarns fibers, different yarn weights, whatever you want to do with the pattern. If pattern modification is your thing, change the pattern up to suit yourself.

The whole point of the project is to see the number of variations we can come up with. I will start a new thread for the actual CAL Challenge on May 4. Please post pictures of your finished items in that thread so I can share them on our Facebook page.

  1. Have a Heart Shawl
  2. Lorelei Shawl
  3. Simply Irresistible Shawl
  4. Triangles Shawl
  5. Oasis Wrap
  6. Magnificent Mantle
  7. French Blue Shawl
  8. Persephone
  9. Bowtie Pi
  10. Graceful Shell

Original Post

I recently posted a Crochet-Along Challenge poll, asking for members to select a type of project we could all work on together, with a big part of the fun being the opportunity to see all the different yarns and color combinations chosen by challenge participants.

Poll results were close: 30.43% wanted a shawl project and 26.09% wanted a scarf project.

So for our first challenge, we're going to make a shawl.

I still need some help, though, in selecting the best free shawl pattern for us to use. We're going to use a free pattern to enable as many people as possible to participate, including those on very limited budgets. (We may do other challenges in the future featuring paid patterns.)

How You Can Help

Post a link to a free shawl pattern here in the thread. If it's a pattern of your own design, or if you've already made the shawl, feel free to include your own photo. Out of copyright concerns, please don't upload a photo belonging to someone else.

Please Keep in Mind

Do your best to pick a shawl for which we could see lots of individual variation among the shawls: maybe motifs, maybe one that would lend itself to different yarn weights or types, etc.

Deadline

I don't want to get overwhelmed with links to sift through, so I'm only going to leave this request open through sometime between 10 PM and midnight central time on Friday, April 26 (two days from now).

So be sure to post your links by then. I'll also be coming up with a list of possible patterns on my own.

Flower Power Shawl by Ekin Deniz (available for free on Ravelry)

That's really pretty! I took a look at the pattern.  It looks a little tricky, since it's not originally in English.  Sometimes things get lost in the translation process.

I liked this one from Red Heart http://www.redheart.com/files/patterns/pdf/LW2871.pdf, I haven't made it but it looks really pretty and versatile.

I just noticed how pretty the Flower Power shawl was. I didn't notice it was made with laceweight yarn! That might be best left for another challenge, when people REALLY want a challenge: either to use laceweight or adapt it to make with a heavier weight yarn!

Keep the suggestions coming, everyone. I know there are tons of wonderful patterns out there that we could use. Love the other suggestions given so far. That Lorelei shawl turns heads all the time in our booth at consumer shows. It's beautiful, and Red Heart finally has Unforgettable available again for people who would want to use that specific yarn.

craftyone---the lorelei shawl has been on my to do list, but I haven't gotten around to it.

I agree that the flower power shawl looks a little tricky. I've never used lace weight yarn.

I've made the rh holey moley shawl. http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/holey-moley-shawl  It uses two strands of sock yarn. I've wondered about trying it with one strand of worsted weight.

I've also made the rh simply irresistible shawl.  http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/pattern-correction-simply-irresistible-shawl

My to do list also includes the sangria shawl:  http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/Accessories/WM1695+Crochet+Sangria+Shawl.htm

the caron ss aran wrap:  http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/ss5_aran_wrap.html

the caron oasis wrap:  http://www.naturallycaron.com/projects/oasis/oasis_1.html

irresistible looks good to me....

I would like to submit my Magnificent Mantle. It's one of my most popular patterns. I've seen it worked in variegated, solid colors, multi-colors, lace-weight, and worsted (see Ravelry for examples). And the pattern is free. :)

nice too!

Some really nice patterns out there...I would like one for Caron SS or 4 ply - since I'm not great with adjusting patterns.

Just a thought.

I like this one to.

One more suggestion. There are over a thousand projects on Ravelry and it can be made in any yarn.

I made this one as a gift to a secret sister. I wouldn't mind having mine own.

This one might be considered too difficult but it would be a good pattern to help people with charts... It's called Triangle Shawl Connected Hearts Charted Design... http://crochet.about.com/library/n030107.htm

I made this one to as a gift for a friend. This one to I would like.
