Crochet a cross stitch pattern

How would you crochet a cross stitch pattern. Is it one stitch per little square. I was going to do the Tunsian simple stitch.

Yup.

Keep in mind that your finished product might be more elongated than it's supposed to be because tunesian is higher than it is wider.  7 stitches x 5 rows makes a perfect square in tunesian.  Hopefully what you want to crochet won't make much of a difference.

Or make your field out of Tunisian, and cross stitch into the fabric.

I did this with Charlie Brown 7 Snoopy.  I used half  double crochet which were taller than wider so Iwould remove a row to keep Charlie Browns head round.  It took months and alot of ripping out.  Use single crochet for more square stitches.
