I am partial to the Linen stitch (or Woven stitch).  There are no holes for baby fingers/toes to get caught in, it makes a nice drapey fabric that is warm but not heavy.

I love the look of the round ripples :O) but my DD just completed her first baby blanket (per costumer who wanted this type of yarn Caron Pounder it was very heavy) she used a DC & SC only (but she crochets tight and perfect) Here is a picture of her first blanket.. But then I am bias :O) She is getting ready to make another for the same customer using the same stitches DC and SC only. This blanket was made to be used when the baby is a little older...
