Want to be a Preemie Protector?

First of all I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong place, and also apologize if I am stepping on anybodies toes by posting this. I do not want to take away from anybodies Charity. So on with my request.

I am a mother of 2 preemie miracles

See http://babysites.com/sites/kaia

and http://babysites.com/sites/aloshua

So I know just how appreciative preemie families are of the charity donations to the NICUs. I see a lot of groups making hats and blankets, but I wanted to do more. A lot of these preemie families have no idea they are expecting a preemie and when they suddenly get hit with having one, they are no where near ready to bring the baby home. Or, they have been on bedrest throughout the pregnancy and were unable to get things for the baby. So, I started a group that goes beyond blankets and hats. My groups goal is to donate little baskets of items to preemie families that are getting ready to be discharged. (I would feel awful giving a basket to a family and then something happening to their baby) The baskets will have various things in them from diapers and wipes to bottles and brushes. Each basket will be wrapped in a blanket and this is where I come to you all. If any of you would be interested in helping make little hats or squares (4inch) for blankets or even full blankets or outfits here is your chance! The group is still very small with only a few people and hardly any donations. I started the donation pot a while ago with a few hats, but me alone can not do it all. The link to the group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/preemie_protectors Or if you just want to crochet without joining the group, that is fine with me! Just contact me and Ill give you an address.

Please, if you know of anybody that would be interested in helping, give them the address http://groups.yahoo.com/group/preemie_protectors Id love for them to join!

And one last thing. If anybody is interested in helping with running the group then contact me! khourtnieys AT yahoo DOT com

Thanks !!

I am a mommy of two healthy preemies. I would not mind working with you..But money is tight..so I would only be able to send things sporaticly..(i.e. when I get the money up for postage) I love crocheting baby things...but my babies are too old for all the cute stuff.

I have a pattern it is my own for Memory bags. The hospital I give to takes them for when a prieme dies and the put items like foot prints death and birth cert. a lock of hair etc. Here is the patern but please remember it is for Charity only!

HDC Keepsake Memory Bag by Jimmie Lu Smallwood

For Charitably purposes only!

With I size hook Chain 36

Row 1 HDC in 3rd ch from hook and each ch. across. Ch. 2 turn

Row 2 HDC in each HDC across Ch. 2 turn.

Rows 3- 21 Repeat row 2. Do not ch.2 at end of row 21

Decreasing rows-

Slip stitch in fist 2 HDC, HDC in next HDC and each across leaving last 2 HDC un- worked.

Repeat decreasing row until you have only 2 HDC. Forming a point like an envelope.

Well I have two hats done, and yarn enough for one more. I've also been picking up little things, bottles, etc.... To put a package together. I need new batteries in my camera, or I would take a picture to post. (One's blue, and one's pink.) I used this pattern. It's really easy.

I found some batteries :D :

i saw the patterns for blankies were from 13" to 20" for preemies. any preference on sizes for the blankies? what works best? i've got 3 hats made so far and bought more yarn today. i love making tiny hats. some might be too big, but if there are full term sick babies in the NICU, they could use those.

Khourtniey- I have been having yahoo problems, and had to change my user name. So now I can't get into the preemie protectors group. Just thought I'd let you know, because I am going to re-subscribe with my new user name. :D So far this month I have done one preemie afghan, and last night I started a sweater. :hook

Please count me in on your charity project. I had all really HUGE babies and seeing the preemies made me STOP complaining about how "rough" I had it. I'm not real experienced so my projects will be simple until I get a little more experience. I think this is so worth while!

There are lots of full term babies in there and even some babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes so they are larger.

The average smallest in the NICU is around 12ozs and the average for the biggest is around 15#.

Well I found a really simple but very cute pattern for preemie booties. I did two pair in less than an hour! (With 4 kids that's an accomplishment!). I took them to church tonight and they must look pretty good because a funeral director at our church asked me to make some for him, for the burials he does for preemies. So sad, but I'm blessed to have found a second way to help someone with this. I started a blanket too, but that will take longer than the booties! LOL!

Khourtniey- I just joined your yahoo group. My ID there is different than here, it's memory_mom_2002, just so you'll recognize me!

My first preemie afghan is coming along nicely. It's so tiny! Well, everything is I guess. My friends all thought I was making doll booties! Is cotton a good thing to use or not? I really like the cotton WW yarns. My son had really sensitive skin and 100% cotton was all he could wear at first.

A friend of mine is a nurse at a local hospital and she asked me to make some stuff for the NICU there... I'm going to be a preemie crochet fool!

Ok, enough outta me!

Do we have to join your yahoo group for this? I have a yahoo ID so if we do it's not a problem...I'm just wondering because I already have a blanket and a couple of hats made, I wouldn't want them to go to waste just because I didn't join!

Well I didnt actually mean born that big but babies spend a lot of time in the NICU and some of the fulltermers with medical problems are pretty big before they get discharged.. However there are big babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes!

I thought I was going to die with 3# babies lol I could not imagine three times that!

:eek :eek

My last one was 10 lbs, 9 oz, and I thought I was going to die!!

Khourtniey- Just so you know, I re-joined the Preemie Protectors group. I mentioned before I was having problems getting into any of my yahoo groups. (I downloaded yahoo messenger and then I couldn't get in to any of the yahoo groups, or access my yahoo mail...) So anyway I rejoined, my user name is crochet_sunny_skies. Dumb user name, I can never think of a good one. Well anyway it is just me rejoining, not a new person. :P I added a new picture of a blanket I did, today.

Hey! I finished my first preemie blanket today. It's nothing fancy, but I'm proud of myself for getting it done! I have another pair of booties too. Can anyone direct me to a really simple hat?

Thanks!

This was on the first page with some links to all kinds of preemie patterns. Here is an easy hat, too. I have made two of these. If you go to Bev's country cottage, and click on 'hats' there are all kinds of patterns, knit and crocheted. Hope you can find an easy one.
