How do I keep yarn from twisting

I can't get past row 3 of a pattern for a top that I've tried 5 times. After joining the starting chain, my "circle" somehow always becomes twisted. Help please...

don't join the starting chain, join after the first row is done and sew the gap up with the tail from the beginning of the chain

It sounds like it is already twisted when you join. When you do your initial chain, before you join, go along your chain VERY carefully to ensure it's not twisted.

I do like Mary does.  Instead of joining the chain - work the first row and then join.
