I don't remember any mention of doilies in the book. I wonder if any of the screenwriters are crocheters?

I'm rereading it and they aren't mentioned in the first meeting dinner clean up scene.

I just saw it too in the part where the dwarves are having dinner at the Hobbit house. The entire scene was horrifyingly funny! Can you imagine having dinner guests like that! Ugh!

at that point in the movie my whole family turned and looked at me! LOL later in the movie Gandalf asks Bilbo when he became so involved in doilies and his mother's dishes. My kids were laughing hysterically about that

That's one of my favorite lines in the whole movie! I had to laugh when I heard it.

When we watched the movie, as I was starting to crack up on the doily line, the Hubster just looked at me over his glasses, grinned, shook his head and said, "I've been bombarded with your crafts, even in the movies!".
