I've always loved napkin folding -- probably because as a perpetually bored only child, I was always checking out origami books from the library and folding away. This fold is the water lily, and I thought the Pinterest idea of nestling in the pine cone was so clever. It's just like making what we used to call, around the third grade, a cootie picker, with just a couple more steps added to it. Could be for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Adding to the rustic look are the coasters I crocheted awhile back, topped with my mom's vintage 50s Fostoria stemware.

Now on to the real work of pie baking, green bean and brussel sprout trimming, and making some cupcakes for the grandson who won't eat pumpkin pie. I'm 73 now, and wondering how many more of these holiday meals I can make without their attendant backaches. Anybody else feel that way?

Beautiful table setting with such a pretty napkin and pinecone.

I feel the same way you do as far as the huge dinners. Taking care of the Hubster this year and my bad back put a big damper on how much I can do. We usually do everything. The eldest daughter is coming out to cook tomorrow but, I wound up making a pumpkin pie and a apple pie anyway and one of the traditional family dishes. She is bringing her pecan pie. Boy is she going to scold me.

We are announcing tomorrow that from now on, all major dinners are going to be either potlucks if they want them here or the grown kids can rotate where the dinner is. Amen. :D

Happy Thanksgiving!

Aw, I hear yall, but it's not the same, if its not at mom's.....I miss that, my mom passed years ago, but we always had dinner at her house, my sister and I cooking over there, and preparing everything, everything but the gravy, mom had to do that, or it wasn't Thanksgiving!!!!! Im thankful for good family, good friends, and good memories!

Thing is, I really like to cook the whole dinner; cooking is therapy that takes my mind off whatever might be bothering me. DH wanted to make the no-more announcement today, but I think we'll hold off. If I pace myself, with breaks over two days, the back isn't too bad. Times when I really miss sitting around being a bum when my own mom was making a great dinner! It's a great feeling, despite the guilt.

Yep, I sure do miss those days when we'd all laze around smelling all the good food while my own mom was fixing it! I hope I can keep it up awhile longer so my kids can enjoy it.

I gave up cooking big meals because my back is much worse than bad. I can't stand without pain and when I lean over counters, stoves and table to prepare, cook and set tables I can't stand up straight afterwards. When my family comes to me for dinner, I have food brought in. I use disposable plates and stuff to make cleanup easier. It may not be as nice as using nice dishes and having a home cooked meal but it is the only thing I can do.
