Hi guys! I'm really glad I've found you!!

 

I'm new to crocheting and I need help! I am trying to make a scarf as my first project and I keep ending up with more/less stitches (hooks?! loops?!) than I'm supposed to have!!

Any tips on how to keep count?!

 

Also, I did a couple of rows of double chains, and then had to switch to single ones, and my single row was just so tight compared to the double rows that I had to start again!!

 

Any tips for a newbie?!

Tip: relax, and try to hold your hook and yarn loosely. As you get quicker at the stitches, you will find your tension stays the same.

One thing that I found very helpful when first starting was to chain in at least one hook size bigger than I was going to stitch in, because I could make myself chain loosely enough - and everything pulled toward the chain!

 

As for keeping track of the # of stitches, I'm probably not the best for advice since I'm sitting here ripping out part of a lopsided Granny Square. . .

Welcome from New Jersey! When I am crocheting too tightly I find that it helps to get up and so something else for a few minutes. Sometimes I just need to give my hand a break. Good luck with your first project. :cheer

Um, let's see...when I started to crochet I had the same problem with the number of stitches in a row mysteriously disappearing! One thing that helped me was figuring out that with single crochet, the "ch1, turn" at the end of row doesn't count as the first stitch in the next row. You need to start your sc right there in that very first sc!

 

Then for double crochet, the "ch3, turn" does count as the first stitch in the next row. So then, you need to start the next row in the next stitch. Make sense?

 

Also, try counting every stitch while crocheting...it's kinda like meditating.

With a little practice, you'll do great!
