I think making three sts and having four loops at the end is probably correct for the cl.

I don't think beg cl is intended for the whole first row. It should be just the first cluster of the row. The 2chains substitute for a partial dc; this is needed because when you start the beg cl your working yarn is at the level of the top of the previous row so you need the chains for height, just like a turning chain. Also the pattern for the row includes both beg cl and cl, which is the one that is repeated around.

 

The name of the pattern would be helpful.

I am really not trying to be argumentative. The reason i asked for the pattern name is that someone may have it to refer to so they can help answer your question.

 

I am not saying the pattern is wrong. I am saying that, per what you posted of The pattern, it says that to start round one, you do a beg-cl. Next you chain 3, and then 5 times you repeat cl, chain 3. So to me the pattern makes clear that beg-cl and cl are two distinct things.
