Deck the Halls CAL

Recommended Posts

:wreathDeck the Halls Crochet&Craft Along:wreath

There are other Holiday and Winter themed CALs that focus on making gifts, but I'd like to focus on making things to decorate our own homes. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice, or another Winter-time holiday, come and join in on the crochet and yarn-crafting fun! Make things to decorate the tree, table, mantel, walls, windows, and any other surface in the home that might need some festive adornment.

Everything is self paced and you set your own goals. You are encouraged to share lots of pictures of your finished projects with us. If it's made from yarn, we want to look at it!

Some ideas to get you started:

Advent Calendar

Banner

Garland

Gingerbread House

Holiday/Winter Themed Afghan

Kitchen Items (e.g. hot pads, dishcloths, towel toppers)

Ornaments

Stockings

Tree Skirt

Tree Topper

Wreath

And a link to lots of free patterns: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/christmas.php (thank you CPC!!)

Some more great patterns: http://www.e-patternscentral.com/list.html?cat_id=583 (These are paid patterns, I am not affiliated with the site, just thought some of these are cute)

Priscilla Hewitt's website: http://www.priscillascrochet.net/freepatterns.html (Scroll to bottom for holiday patterns. Also note that patterns on her site open as pdf)

JP Fun free ornaments: http://www.jpfun.com/patterns/free/ornaments/index.shtml (again, not affiliated)

Winter patterns: http://www.free-crochet.com/list.html?cat_id=324 (several pages to scroll through. Also note that you will need to log in and all patterns open as pdf)

*I will add more project ideas and links as this thread grows.

Fun Facts:

Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year.

As of August 8th, there are 138 Days left until Christmas!

Winter Solstice will be on Friday, December 21st this year

Hanukkah begins the evening of Saturday, December 8th, and ends the evening of Sunday, December 16th this year

Due to some unfortunate events, I no longer have the majority of my holiday decorations. In the past I only used handmade decorations. If it was on the tree (or anywhere else in the house) it was handmade by me or someone else, no exceptions--well, one exception--the lights. :hbulb;) I'd like to continue with that tradition and rebuild my supply of handmade holiday decor.

These are just the things from my Ravelry queue, but there are TONS more that I would love to make. I know I won't be able to get them all done this year, but most people don't gather all their decorations in one years time anyway. ;)

Baby Blitzen

Santa Pillow

Pineapple Ornament Cover

Christmas Tree Doily

Gingerbread House

Ooh, I've never seen that striped one before. I like it. I have made the other one before for a swap partner, it turned out really nice and she seemed really pleased with it. It was black with a feather boa trim around the edge. It was tempting to make another for myself! :lol

Hm! I might have to jump in on this one too!

I'm thinking Tree Topper... My hubby and I have been on the look out for a nice one these last 3 years. We never seem to be able to find one we both like that is reasonable. My parents still use a Plastic Canvas one my mom made when she was young.

I really want to do some things for my new house and a few gift odds and ends.

The sniowman pillow is adorable, if you keep adding such cute things I will be here thru Easter!

I know I have to do another Christmas afghan, I am thinking ponisetta like motif.

I have to do the string of Christmas lights, we cannot have the real ones at work. Nice alternative. Need a few snowmeN for work too!

Looking for a towel topper you can slide the towel under and not have to cut the towel.

Anyone know what happened 'Rodney' from Annie's Attic? The reindeer with the lights wrapped around him?

Hi Paula! Glad to have you join us. :hook

Do you have any projects in mind yet? I really want to get started on the pineapple ornament covers from Champygirl, but need to find the ornaments I bought last year for them. I think they might be in my daughter's attic. ;)

I do but am yet to find patterns. I need to make stockings for my four kids, a Christmas banner which will be based of Lucy's from Attic 24, snowflakes for my roof, ornaments for the tree and an afghan for the lounge. I don't know if I want the afghan to be some kind of squares or a graphghan. I might go the squares because by the time I finish the graphghans for the kiddies for xmas I don't think I will want to see another for ages.

I so could use a couple snowflake placemats AND white snowflakes would look very nice in the windows in the desert.....

I have always wanted to do this Holiday Delight afghan from free patterns .com I might give that a try to start this CAL. I'm thinking that I would like to adapt the angel I use on my door at Christmas ...:think

Need to decide something soon. :wlol

This looks like fun!

And where or where can I find a crochet advent calender pattern?!!! I have so been thinking about making one but had no idea there were really patterns out there!

Bernet has a very cute knit glove garland which could easily turned into crochet....

I am busy tagging and printing patterns out so I can go shopping this weekend and get started!!

Oh, I want to join in!!! Growing up, we always made ceramic ornaments for Christmas, as I got older I went to cross stitch. I would love to crochet stuff for Christmas! I have no Christmas decorations at all!! Last Christmas I didn't decorate as I knew I had to start over! I am excited about this crochetalong!!!

When I did one of the kitchen swap, I got a snowflake washcloth pattern and some sparkly yarn, as well as she made one! I would love to top some Christmas towels, make some stockings for my nephews, etc!!!

How awesome that your parents still use the same one after all these years. My mother used to decorate our tree the exact same way each year with the same ornaments in the same places... I always thought it was so boring, but now looking back, I can understand the nostalgia behind it.

I look forward to seeing which pattern you decide on!

Smith, You've got a nice list started there. You sound about like me with the ever-growing list!

This is the only towel topper that I know about that you don't have to cut the towel, but I'm sure there are lots more out there... http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf51824958.tip.html

I think I might remember the reindeer you are talking about. Or maybe it was my imagination, he was a little on the small side and you used a strand of plastic lights from the craft store? Or that might have been one I saw on etsy :think

There is one on the Crochet Village site called "Roebuck" and you crochet the lights, I believe it used to be on the Annie's site as well... http://www.crochetvillage.com/roebuckreindeer.htm
