"3 hdc decrease into one" - what does this mean?

Help! My pattern says "3 hdc decrease into 1" -- what the ehck does that mean? How can you put three of these stitches in one if they all take up two stitches each?

Without reading the entire row, my best guess is that they are telling you to hdc three stitches together. You are just making one decrease, not three.

It is not the case that each hdc takes up two stitches.

A hdc is one stitch not two. Each hdc is in it's own chain or other stitch. You are being told to crochet three hdc together which is a decrease making 3 stitches into one...

"3 hdc decrease into 1" means you are to decrease 3 hdc stitches into 1. Basically, you are turning 3 stitches into 1 stitch.

 

EXAMPLE:

 

insert hook into next stitch; yarn over and pull up loop;

 

insert hook into next stitch; yarn over and pull up loop;

 

insert hook into next stitch; yarn over and pull up loop;

 

now pull hook through all loops on hoop;

 

You have now decreased three hdc into one!
