Well, it has to to in order to do it's job...it adds 'stuff' to the fabric to give the fabric more body, crispness. A bit like you might add 'stuff' to your hair to style it. It will wash out with laundering.

It may leave residue but I never have had it change the color or look of any of my doilies. I use a spray starch on mine when blocking them. And heaven knows I have made enough doilies to have noticed by now if it was going to make how the piece looked.
