:thinkMy husband asked me to knit him a hat with a single skull on it.No problem I said. Then he said he wanted the hat black and the skull a really dark gray so it is hard to see.

Well for one....I don't have any dark gray on hand. And two.....why go through all that of knitting in a design nobody will be able to see?

Make it a LOT easier: don't use a second yarn.

Make the skull in, say, reverse stockinette. That is, if the body of the hat is st st, the skull will be in purl. Very subtle, and only you and he will know it's there.

Bonuses: you won't have to purchase new yarn. you won't have to carry extra yarn across the back. you won't have to learn stranded-yarn techniques, if you don't already know them.

What if you knit the hat straight black, and then use the duplicate stitch to make the skull with? Just an idea that came to me.
