You CAN do graphs if you know how to single crochet (sc). Each square on the graph represents a (sc).All you do is change colors. To change colors, you complete the sc with the next color. Hold the yarn you're not using on top of the stitches and sc over it. Try something small like a hot pad. Here's a good pattern if you like the Rolling Stones...
