making a charted duckie afghan

I wanted to show a friend of mine how I make a charted afghan - she wants to do a Mickey Mouse one. So, I showed her how I make a chart from a picture. I found the picture of a duckie on line (free clip art). I added the cattail since the duck looked lonely.

 

 

Then I gathered the colors I wanted,

 

 

And started crocheting. I'm using half double crochets. The first 24 rows are done and now I'll be starting on the charted part.

Ahhh... very cute and a perfect "show and tell" project to teach another! You can ALWAYS use a baby blanket too! I am finding that out this year. After this I plan on making sure I have some extras on hand.

Well, I've got the water part done - you can kind of see the bottom of the duck now - I have the first little bit of yellow in there. The grey for the outline is there, and the green at the base of the cattails. Lots of yarns to work with already!

You could always start with something smaller. Coasters, or a hotpad, or even a pillow.

Time for an update - I've just about finished the body of the duck. I'll be adding the gray for the outline of the back of the duck in another row or two. I'm almost to the halfway point.
