FABulous afghan in Smurf movie!

Recommended Posts

Just returned home from taking my girls to see the new Smurf movie and loved the afghan clearly visible in the apartment. Anyone else see it yet?

And how do we find out what the pattern is?!

I am trying to find a good photo still, but this is the only one I've seen that includes the afghan. You can see only a small part in the foreground and some more in the background.

But for sure it's crochet, and there are real close-up shots of it in the movie.

I'm on a quest!!

I don't have any idea about the pattern, but just wanted to say that this made me laugh :) Especially because I'm the same exact way!! I pick up on everything crochet and my family members think I'm crazy :lol I hope you find it!!

Same here. My fiancee thinks I'm nuts too.

Looks like it would be very easy to duplicate. Just a simple square -- with a nice little edging after they are all sewn together. I too, manage to see all of the crochet in movies. I catch hats, scarves and vests all the time -- with an occasional afghan. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I am the same way. I was looking for a good picture as well to see if I can crochet it. My husband actually liked it and asked if I could make one for our couch. I was excited but couldn't find a good picture either. Still on the hunt though.

i have not seen the movie, but from the pictures of the afghan I have seen it looks like the squares are done in a spiral rather than ending each round. It should be pretty easy to duplicate. It looks like it is either double crochet or half double crochet, but either would work fine.

OMG, I'm so happy to find this forum. I'm a crochet nut, but I never happened upon this forum until I googled crochet afghan smurf movie! I too am looking for the pattern and I loved the spiral look. I hope to be hanging out here more often!

Okay, just found this article on the movie set pieces. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/home_blog/2011/08/smurfs-movie-set.html

Hello, I also found this forum after returning home from seeing the Smurfs movie - I LOVe that blanket!

I'm not really very good at making my own patterns - I need someone cleverer than me to get me started!

The square spirals are so different - i've spent hours trawling patterns but can only come up with circles/spirals in squares - which is not it!

I think I'm obsessed - so I'll keep checking back here to see if any lovely clever crochet clogs can come up with the solution!

xxxxxxx:)

That afghan is great, yet not quite "it." the one in the movie is very irregular, and looks like the edging and joining are more involved.

Thank you!

we are happy you found us, too! Thanks for the awesome photo! :clap

The Never-Ending blanket square looks close, but much more regular. Maybe we could use that as a starting place and break some of that designer's 'rules.'

Here are a few spiral Square patterns that might help get started: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/squaring-the-spiral-dishcloth

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/square-spiral-dishcloth (Free)

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spiral-dishcloth-2 (free)

You could combine these squares in different sizes in a Babette-type (http://www.interweavestore.com/Crochet/Patterns/Babette-Blanket.html) lay-out. Or if you can get a good look at the afghan as in the one shown in this thread by tuevans, you could try to copy that layout of large and small squares. If you use the same colors, you should be able to come up with a reasonable facsimile of the original. :)

Funny how one afghan can spark so much interest! Several folks making their first visit here to Crochetville, all because of one afghan. So, when we crochet a project, take pride! You never know what interest it will generate! :D

In my day-long internet trawl (kids at playscheme - me mad about crochet!) I did come across a lot of these 2-colour spiral patterns - and whilst very nice I dont think that's how its done on the smurfs apartment blanket. GRRRRRR.

I've tried merging a spiral pattern with the idea of going down from dc's to hdc's to sc's to make a flatter edge, and I've had a bit of success but then it goes all squiffy and lop-sided. I can't work out the maths of dividing the number of stitches over the side to be made, whilst also doing the required number of increases. I end of with a hdc and an sc in the same stitch, and I dont think that's right, the crochet police will get me. oh well, let's hope that someone can rise to the challenge, its too hard for me!:(

I've spent some time today too trying to merge a spiral pattern with a spiral granny square pattern and I've come up with some very hideous shapes. What I loved about the piece is the irregularity of the squares and that's what I'm looking for. Don't know if I have the patience to figure it out. Glad there are others obsessing over it though!

DebraKay, I think you got it. Spiral squares crocheted together in a Babette-type layout

Yep; I think the Babette layout is IT. As for the "spiral" squares' what we mean is the the squares are worked in continuous (ahem) "rounds" as opposed to chaining up to begin a distinct row.

While those patterns show circles in squares are really cool, that's not what was used in the Smurf 'ghan.

And it's very close to the Never-ending square linked above, I think. Arranged Babette-style. I remember color changes mid-row during some of the close-ups, and I believe it's majority HDC. (so the actual movie did not have me enthralled...)

Ha! It looks like I'm going to have to sit thru this movie again when it comes to the discount cinema!

This has been so much fun!

In the photo that features the afghan, check out the small side table next to the rocking chair! It's covered in something crocheted with pom pom edging.
