Jonathan Adler Homage

Last week, I wandered into a Jonathan Adler store to drool over his bargello pillows, and I got this idea that maybe I can do something like that with crochet. I've done a little bargello in the past, and I don't enjoy it very much.

 

But I do LOVE to crochet. I'm not necessarily trying to recreate one of his patterns in crochet-I actually tried, and it didn't work very well-but I would like to do something that's more of a tribute to him.

 

His stuff is more geometric than floral, and he uses great color combinations. Does anyone have any ideas about a pattern or stitch that looks great in bright colors, but isn't a hexagon or flower?

I looked at a closeup of them, and I think it would work with different hights stitches, such as sc, hdc, dc, 2dc, 3dc. The middle part of the first one could be done by making sc, hdc..and so on.

The hook should always go down between stitches, not into them.

I love the diamond pillow it would make a beautiful afghan. Mosaic crochet works designs similar to bargello maybe using it to make your own design.

I'll try out the alternating height stitches. And I think that last pattern on ravelry would look great in Jonathan Adler colors.

You can duplicate, re-create or design your own with graph crochet.

I was able to achieve clean, straight lines because I Tapestry Crocheted this. I use a strange type of graph for designing. Then I transfer it to regular square-ruled graph paper for easier reading. The special graph paper was designed by Carol Ventura.

That really does look like Bargello, thanks. I had the idea of a bargello type pattern, with a crochet texture, but I checked out the youtube video, and tapestry crochet looks really interesting. I think I may try both. Good thing I have some vacation time next month.

The Victorian Ornaments Afghan in the August edition of Crochet! magazine is very similar to the 3rd pillow you posted.
