kelvweb
Not the brand shown on the blog below. (I don't like working with wool). Just something similar to the 2nd and 3rd pictures down: http://dutchsister-s.blogspot.com/2011/06/tropical-monday.html
CraftyZone
She is using yarn that is used for needlepoint it is what I use for my needlepoint. You can find it most places that sell needlepoint now I don't know if they make in other than wool but it may possible.
antara
I believe I've seen those in the needlework section of Joann's.
crabby rat
Yes, it does come in something other than wool... (or at least it used to...) A friend of mine gave me some yarn she had picked up at the Salvation Army store - in that little stash was a small skein like the ones in the picture... The label says "Bucilla Plastic Canvas Tapestry Yarn" 100% acrylic fiber... Hope this helps!!

nemomum
Yes, those are needlepoint (often referred to as tapestry) wool. They would probably work out pretty expensive compared to balls of normal wool though, they are about 33p at the cheapest here in the UK. I used Anchor when I do needlepoint because they are antifade and moth treated.
