My name is Mandee I am 21yr old and I have a 1yr old little boy. I am a stay at home mommy and was looking for a hobby to keep me busy in the extra few mins a day my son might give me so I chose crochet and I hope to become a pro at it! So any tips and helpful hints would be much appreciated!

Welcome Mandee!

My suggestion...count count count :D That is where I get myself in trouble the most on a lot of patterns..is not counting to make sure I have the correct stitch count.

Have fun! Can't wait to see pics of your creations!

Hi and welcome to the Ville:hook

I'm sure you will get lots of replies to help you get started. There is a lot of wisdom on this forum! Also, you might want to look through the threads in the Crochet Help section, you'll find some great advice in previous discussions.

2 websites i really like are Nexstitch http://www.nexstitch.com/v_crochet_videos.html the tutorials and articles are great.

CrochetCabana http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/index.htm

and also has a good dictionary http://www.crochetcabana.com/crochet_dictionary.htm

There are some really great reference books available which you can probably find at your local library; are you interested in recommendations of books?

I started a couple of years ago to make toys and dolls dresses for various nieces and nephews. I saw all these amazing patterns for doll's clothes and cute toys and was unable to make any of them.

I used the children's section at my library to learn. The kids books were so helpful.

Enjoy!

I think this is a great idea! the explanations are very clear. I had a light-bulb moment yesterday looking at a kids' knitting book, something i had not realized about the stitches. the kids' books usually have really cute small projects to start on too. Each book will be a little different in its approach so checkout several :book

Welcome to Crochetville!

As someone above said, make sure you count your stitches. That's what I messed up on so much when I first started!

Have fun! It's addicting!

I am new to crocheting too, I only started in January. If you get stuck there are a lot of tutorials on you tube for the different stitches. I would also say keep trying. There were several times I would get so stumped and upset-put it away and try it again later or another day. Remember to enjoy it.

the only kids books I can think of at the moment are Get Hooked http://www.amazon.com/Get-Hooked-Simple-Steps-Crochet/dp/0823050920/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1309741159&sr=8-1

and Get Hooked Again http://www.amazon.com/Get-Hooked-Again-Simple-Crochet/dp/0823051102/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1309741159&sr=8-2

I can't remember exactly what the instruction parts are like, but Get Hooked Again especially has some really cute patterns.

Two reference books I love are Crocheting in Plain English by M Righetti http://www.amazon.com/Crocheting-English-Second-Maggie-Righetti/dp/0312353545/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309741442&sr=1-5

and Complete Photo guide to Crochet by M Hubert http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Photo-Guide-Crochet-Comprehensive/dp/1589234723/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1309741502&sr=1-1

I got both of these from the library and found them very helpful. I know our library still has both and they are often available at used sites for more reasonable prices than Amazon is showing if you decide to buy later. I also used the Knitting books and while never became great at knitting, I still bought the books for people who found them helpful.
