0 CollieGrl64
I tend to find acrylics don't truly soften up until after it is washed ... this is any brand name red heart or caron or any in my opinion. Hope this helps you.
0 losingmymind2
Washing is the way to soften up acrylic yarn; and don't forget fabric softener.
0 FrLopLady
some colors of redheart ss to me just aren't soft. I returned a skein once because I thought something was wrong with it. It was hard to crochet with and not soft at all. I found later that some colors just aren't as nice as others. I did a prayer shawl in TLC and it was not as soft as I wanted, but washing it did help a lot.
0 KittieHook
I'm ready to discontinue working on a new afghan because the yarn (Red Heart) is like "hay". I hate the thought of working on it.
0 RoseRed
Wash and dry. It'll wash the sizing out of the yarn and it'll soften up a lot. RH softens up quite a bit after it's washed.
0 cris
For the most part, the RH yarn does soften after washing but there are a few colors that just don't. For me, I tend to use ILTY brand instead of RH. RH is good in a pinch, but I like it to be softer when working with it to (I'm very texture based)
